When you hear the word “hormones”, what do you think of? At our practice, we think about the role hormones play in our health as we age. That’s because some chronic medical conditions are more likely to develop if you are living with improper hormone levels. And as we age, some hormones are likely to naturally decrease as we age - and may drop into a danger zone. In men, this drop in hormones may not only lead to a higher risk of illness - it may also affect reproductive health, muscle bulk and strength, and more.

To help you avoid this situation, Medigenics Longevity Center offers anti-aging medical services that target dropping hormone levels. Through hormone therapies, we can ensure that your hormone levels remain at acceptable levels. To find out if you may benefit from such care, contact us to schedule a visit with Dr. Ashok Shetty, a board-certified physician specializing in Internal Medicine.

FAQs on Male Hormone Replacement Therapy at Medigenics Longevity Center:

Why Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Important?

Hormonal therapy is important because of the changes the human body naturally experiences while aging. With time, it’s normal to see certain hormone levels decrease. It’s also normal to see bodies become less sensitive to various hormones. While some drops fall within a normal, i.e. healthy level, others do not. In these cases, the changes can put a person’s body at a higher risk of developing an age-related illness. This is because the drops in hormones may affect metabolism, heart health, bone strength, and more.

Fortunately, using hormone therapy to minimize these changes can minimize our risk of developing the age-related ailments associated with those changes (i.e. diabetes, obesity, stroke and heart attack, etc.).

Does Your Practice Focus On Treating Drops In Male Hormones?

Yes and no. There is a group of hormones known as androgens that play a role in male traits and reproductive activity. They are, however, present in both men and women. Therefore, calling them "male hormones" is a bit misleading. This not-quite-accurate name came about because of the important role they play in male health. Testosterone in particular is well known for its role in the male body.

Why Is Testosterone Important For Men?

While testosterone is important for both men and women, it plays a major role in male health overall. Testosterone is required for:

  • male sexual development
  • reproductive function
  • building muscle bulk
  • maintaining healthy levels of red blood cells
  • maintaining bone density

Because it’s so important to their health, some men with unnaturally low levels of testosterone can benefit from hormone therapy.

How Is The Hormone Therapy Administered?

Several options are available to patients that need male hormone therapy. These include injections, patches, and gels.

Are There Risks Associated With Testosterone Therapy?

Any medical procedure carries some level of risk. In the case of male hormone therapy, side effects can range from minor to severe. Minor effects include fluid retention, acne, and increased urination. More serious side effects can include decreased testicle size, the worsening of existing sleep apnea, increased cholesterol levels, decreased sperm count, and infertility. You will therefore want to discuss any and all possible side effects  - and how to respond to them - with your doctor.

How Do You Diagnose Hormone Levels In People?

When you visit Medigenics Longevity Center, we will use specific tests to measure hormone levels in your body. Before prescribing any hormone therapy, we will conduct a Hormonal Assessment for Men. This male hormones test is used to monitor for various declining hormone levels, specifically, those associated with age-related disorders.

You can expect the testing process to proceed in the following manner:

  • We will perform any baseline testing to assess your current nutritional status and health.
  • We will send out for the test results, which will be processed off-site.
  • We will review your results and then proceed to develop an individualized plan meant to address your health needs.

Following testing, specific care recommendations can be made to address your particular hormone levels and health needs.
